Jason Schmidt Avendaño Research Funding Award!

usfreachlab

We are thrilled to share that Jason Schmidt Avendaño was chosen as one of two PhD students at the University of South Florida (USF) to receive the Graduate Research Collaboration Award. This award provides research funding to support the collaboration between graduate students from across the USF system and the USF St. Petersburg campus faculty.

Project Overview: Collaborating with Dr. Mark Pezzo, Jason will conduct a series of studies exploring the connection between cognitive processing speed, rhythmic complexity, and tempo preference in various musical drum patterns. Jason want to explore how people's preferences for the speed of drum beats are influenced by the complexity, density, and starting tempo of the patterns, especially as they age. Jason's research will have implications for learning, cognitive decline prevention, and even AI-generated speech and information delivery design. Jason's research delves into fundamental questions about the relationship between cognitive processing speed, rhythmic complexity, and aging, which can have far-reaching applications. For instance, it could help determine the optimal rate for presenting complex information to older individuals, impacting learning, safety, and aesthetic preferences.
